I was a little hesitant at first to jump on board the beauty train trying Rihanna’s new makeup line, Fenty Beauty. I don’t typically go for celebrity makeup lines because I feel like they are sometimes all hyped up for nothing and not about quality. I finally decided to try the makeup line after seeing a lot of the positive reviews online; I figured if I didn’t like it I could always return it. Well, I was completely blown away by how much I loved her foundation and match stix! So far I’ve been using the Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation in 190 and the Match Stix Trio in Medium for the past week.
To be honest I thought I wouldn’t like the foundation, but after testing it out for the past week through all sorts of elements including dancing all night at a halloween party, it really proved me wrong. I love that she made sure to include all shades of the spectrum from very very pale to very very dark and everything in between. I was able to find a shade that fit my skin tone perfectly (even though I recognize my skin tone (light-medium with neutral sometimes yellowish undertones) is much easier to pair in other makeup lines, sometimes they can appear a little too orangeish).
I also really love the feel of the foundation, it sets perfectly on my skin to a soft slightly velvety feel. Some foundations still feel too wet or too dry but this one sets perfectly even before putting on any setting powder. I do have mostly oily skin that sometimes turns into combination skin in the winter months so I feel like the soft matte is perfect for my skin type. It blends really nicely and doesn’t feel heavy at all but is buildable for when you want more coverage.
Besides the color and the feel, I also oddly like the smell of the foundation. I know it sounds weird! But hey if you have to put something on your face you don’t want it to smell bad. It’s a light pleasant smell that’s not overpowering. Now let’s talk about the staying power. This foundation actually stays on all day! I haven’t had any problem of it wearing off or smudging or anything. I typically will use Smashbox primer then use this foundation and set my makeup with Makeup Forever translucent powder. I’m thinking of trying the Fenty Beauty primer to go along with this since I love the foundation so much.
I also bought the Fenty Beauty Match Stix Trio in Medium. The Medium kit comes with the contour stick in Mocha, concealer stick in Bamboo, and shimmer highlighter stick in Trippin (a golden-glazed apricot color) for a hefty price of $54. It’s not a bad deal though because if you were to buy them all separately it would be about $75 as they are $25 each. However, I will say that I wasn’t immediately in love with the concealer and highlighter sticks. I love the contour stick, it glides on smoothly and a good shade for contouring. I did go with the Medium trio because I felt like the light might be too light on my skin tone, I’m at a 190 for foundation so almost on the verge of medium. However, I wasn’t so sold on the concealer and highlighter sticks as they were a little more difficult to glide onto the skin. After a bit of using it I grew to like the highlighter stick as it was better to put on once I warmed it up a little bit on my hand. However, I still don’t love the concealer as an undereye concealer because it doesn’t compare to my favorite NARS radiant creamy concealer. I was debating taking these back but and just getting the contour stick but that alone is $25 and I wouldn’t have the highlighter. So my advice is if you don’t care for stick highlighters just get the contour stick alone.
Overall, I’m really pleasantly surprised by how much I like the Fenty Beauty foundation and contour stick and I’m looking forward to trying more of her products. I’m most likely going to be picking up the primer and the Gloss Bomb Univerisal Lip Luminizer the next time I make it to Sephora. Let me know your thoughts below on her makeup line!
